i see a lot of bumber stickers that inform me that "our" troops are defending "our" freedoms, and that i should support them because of that. now, i don't really give a poetic f**k about staying the course or any of that, i want my brothers and sisters home right now. that said, i refuse to take the ownership of saying those are "our" troops. if i had any ownership in what the troops were doing, they would be occupying DC and state capitols, conscripting the children of the allegedly elected officials, and then starting work on some public works projects to get some clean water and food to people who need it here. Also, they would be opening every government record and destroying all weapons except personal sidearms, which would be kept, and extras distributed to the people for hunting, protection, and the like.
i'm also leery of having any discussion of "our'' freedoms. i have freedoms, and you can try to take them from me, however if i can manage to live with some measure of integrity, you will not be able to take my freedoms from me, even if you kill me. that is to say, i will not give another ownership of my freedom to say what i want. it is not neccesary that i speak truth to power, power is not listening and likely doesn't care. to keep this freedom, it is only neccesary to speak the truth to myself.
i don't even know if this could be called our country or our government. the land, some would say, is stolen. really, the land belongs to itself and we live at it's mercy. and i take no ownership in the federal or state governments. they do not serve me or mine. i do not need their highways, police, etc. all i need is food for me and mine, a little love, a friend or two, and a place to hide when the wind is high. the government doesn't give me any of that.
in any case, i've found that those who want to tell me about our troops and our freedoms and our country and our government are trying to get me to trade my very soul for the green and the gold. i say do for self. buy in a little if it feeds your kids, but when the bullets are flying, you'd best remember whose side you're on.

I suggest a book of post-it notes and a sharpie. Write on the post-it's such wonderful things like
"Thank you President Bush!" and on another "Spend Your Tax Cut Here" with an arrow pointing down. Then affix them above the price of the gas at gas stations.
